Coach Dmitry Tursunov’s Russian nationality becomes the reason for Anett Kontaveit parting ways with him

Dmitry Tursunov, Anett Kontaveit
Anett Kontaveit has climbed up to world number 2, despite making it to just two tournaments final in 2022, and winning one of them. She has had a very poor season till now, bowing out in the first and second round of many tournaments including a first-round exit in the French Open 2022. Though she has climbed the ranking ladder reaching a career-high ranking of number 2, she faced a huge setback.
Kontaveit had to split up with her coach Dmitry Tursunov, a former number 20. Tursunov has been part of the Kontaveit team since last August and after less than a year together, they had to part ways. The main reason for the split is that Tursunov was not able to accompany Konteveit for her practices and tournaments due to some tough restrictions and it was affecting her game a lot. Kontaveit elaborated on the problems in an interview.

Anett Kontaveit felt her on-court performance was being affected.

Talking to the Estonian outlet ERR, Kontaveit elaborated on the problems she faced. She said: “The reason is that, since he has a Russian passport, it is very difficult for him to get visas at the moment, meaning he can’t accompany me to many tournaments. I still feel I need a coach who can accompany me and who does not have so many practical issues,”
Kontaveit also said: “There was a lack of such security, given the situation. He could not come to America with me in March, and now he had a visa problem in relation to England. The visa process was very complicated for him.”
She said that situation had become quite difficult for her too. She quipped: “I do think that everything is connected. When there is a good feeling off-court, it will be reflected more on-court.” She also thanked him saying: “I want to thank him for a very successful and strong cooperation, I am very grateful to him,”
Tursunov and Kontaveit wished each other the best for their journeys ahead as the dup parted ways amicably. Tursunov wrote: “I would like to announce that Anett and I will not continue my cooperation.“I want to thank Anett for this opportunity, congratulate her on the highest ranking in her career, and wish her success in the future. I am proud of the work we did and a little sad, but sometimes good things end. Thanks again, and good luck!”
