How did Holger Rune upset Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris Masters?
Holger Rune may have caused the biggest upset of his entire career by winning the 2022 Paris Masters title. He defeated Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that went on for over 2 hours. He is also the first player ever to defeat Djokovic after losing the first set in an ATP 1000 tournament. This is one match he is going to remember for a lifetime.
The student defeated the master! But how did he do this? Well, it seems like his approach was pretty simple but, of course, effective. He used both his strengths- serve and then forehand to topple the defending champion. Rune won 16 out of 18 points in total to win and even used his backhand at the right moments to steal winning points from the Serbian legend.
The young Dane attacked Djokovic every time and hit the ball most of the time inside the baseline. He unnerved the Serb and made him defend himself most of the time. That’s not all, the 19-year-old was also fluid in his court movements and was able to come to the ball rather quickly. Resultantly, this did not allow Djokovic to take control of the match.
