2023 US Open Champion Coco Gauff defeated 6th seed Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinal round of the China Open. This win marks her 16th continuous match that she has engraved under her name. It is surprising to think someone who would get ousted in the very first round of Wimbledon 2023, come this long just a few months later.

Talking in the post-match press conference after her quarterfinal round, she said, “If you are going to win 16 times, not all of them will be simple victories. This is the first time I’ve had a streak. I definitely didn’t expect this turn of events after Wimbledon.

Gauff’s year started on a decent note. She managed to reach the quarters and semifinals of most of the matches. On the other hand, her doubles stint this season has been extremely well. She and her partner, Jessica Pegula, are currently World No. 2 in the doubles’ ranking.

In the grass court tournaments, she reached the QFs of Eastbourne but lost to her doubles’ partner Jessica Pegula. In Wimbledon, she performed horribly by losing to fellow American player Sofia Kenin. But her US leg of the tour has been exceptional. She won three tournaments (Citi Open, Cincinnati Masters, and US Open), with one of them being a Grand Slam.

Coco Gauff set to face Iga Swiatek next at China Open

Defeating Sakkari in straight sets, Gauff has placed herself into the semis where she will meet with Iga Swiatek. Swaitek was world number 1 for 75 weeks till she was overthrown by Aryna Sabalenka. Till now, the Polish has lost only 11 matches this season, and one of those shocking defeats came from 19-year-old Gauff.

Gauff crashed on Swiatek and took her down in an amazing three-setter. After the first set ended in a tiebreaker in Gauff’s favor, Swiatek tried to make a comeback in the second set. But she could not go past Coco Gauff, who snatched the game from her in the 3rd set.

That win somehow acted as fuel for Gauff to win the US Open. Since then, after a short break, she looks fit like ever, with great energy. On the other hand, the past few months have been difficult for Swiatek. She has not been on her best performance and might not be able to go past the teen. Chances are for Gauff to clinch the victory in a 3 setter.
