American tennis stars Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have scripted history and matched the Williams sisters, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, as they qualified for the 2023 WTA Finals. As Pegula and Gauff qualified for the WTA Finals for the second consecutive year, they became the first Americans to reach the event in consecutive years since Serena Williams and Venus Williams in 2008–09, Vanguard.

Coco Gauff, ranked No. 3 in the world, qualified in September after her maiden Grand Slam title win in New York, when the first set of qualifications were announced by the WTA. Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula also secured a place in the first week of October. The American aces have also earned a doubles qualification along with qualifying for the singles event.

The pair qualified courtesy of titles at the WTA 1000 Miami Open and the WTA 500 Qatar Open (Doha) and runner-up finishes at WTA 1000 events at the Marid Open and the Italy Open. Talking about their singles qualification, Gauff’s WTA 1000 title win in Cincinnati, followed by a US Open title, ensured her a place in the top eight. Meanwhile, for Pegula, three final qualifications along with a WTA 1000 title in Montreal worked well.

How do things stack up for Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula?

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula became the first pair to qualify for the 2023 WTA Finals. They are leading the rankings in the doubles race to the year-end tournament. The other two pairs to have qualified for the 2023 WTA Finals are Storm Hunter Elise Mertens, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

The American pair clearly hold an edge over their counterparts and will be the favorites to win the title here in Mexico. However, Krejcikova and Siniakova won the title in 2021, while Elise Mertens won the doubles title with Veronika Kudermetova in the previous edition. On the other hand, Gauff and Pegula have never won the year-end tournament.

Even in the singles category, Pegula and Gauff had a terrible show last year. Both Americans finished last in their group, failing to make the semifinals. However, Gauff is in red-hot form this year, while Pegula has also performed consistently. Hence, both players are expected to fare well at the 2023 WTA Finals.
