Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) World No. 3 Coco Gauff claimed that the negative comments inspired her to give her best performance. The American teenager, fresh from the high of winning the US Open 2023 title, admitted that she scrolled through Twitter (now called X) and when she found negative comments, used them to power up her game.
“I feel like my brain just works differently. I still have the filters on my Instagram,” she said. She revealed that she looked at both positive and negative comments. However, according to the American, while negative comments are not welcome, she used them to draw inspiration for her game. “I wouldn’t say negativity is something that’s welcome. It’s more something I draw inspiration from,” she admitted. “A lot of people don’t like it. For me, I’m very stubborn. I like to argue. I like to prove people wrong,” she said.
However, she also warned that this was not something she would recommend for everyone. “Some of the comments can get out of hand. But for the most part, I don’t know; it’s weird; maybe I feed on negativity,” she said.
While the American admitted to receiving a few life-threatening comments every now and then, she said that they were mostly negative. This, however, does not have a detrimental effect on the teen. In fact, it is quite the opposite, where these negative comments fire up her game.
Nevertheless, regardless of her methods, her reactions to negativity seem to be working for the American youngster. The year 2023 saw Gauff come out of her shell and prove her worth, not only in singles but in the doubles category as well. With a world rank of 3 in singles and a career-high ranking of 1 in doubles, the American has qualified for the year-end final in both categories. She will be teaming up with friend and doubles partner Jessica Pegula as the season gets closer.
Coco Gauff moves on to the second round of the China Open
World No. 3 Coco Gauff won the first round at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing and moved on to the second round. In the first round, she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova with a score of 5-7, 3-6.
In the second round of the tournament, she will be facing Petra Martic. The Croatian had defeated Sorana Cirstea in the first round, thus establishing her spot in the second.
Coco Gauff, however, is in the best form of her career to date. With consecutive wins at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, where she won her maiden Grand Slam, the American seems almost unstoppable at the moment. However, both players will hope to play their best game in order to win their second match of the tournament.
