Coco Gauff gave a shout-out to American rapper Cardi B in the post-match conference after defeating World No. 1 Iga Swiatek for the first time in her career in the semi-final of the Cincinnati Open. With this, Gauff has cruised through to the final of the tournament, where she will now face Karolina Muchova

The 19-year-old American tennis sensation was winless against Swiatek in the seven matches that they had played against each other before today. Coco finally got herself a victory over the Pole in her eighth match against her. Thus, she could relate to the lines from Cardi- B’s hit song “Get Up 10”

“I saw a quote. Its ‘knock me down 9 times, get up 10.’ It’s a Cardi B song. So in this case, knock me down seven times, get up eight,” Coco said in the post-game on-court interview.

Talking about the match between Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, she won it 6(2)-7(7), 6-3, 4-6. It was the intense third round that turned the match around in the youngster’s favor. She is now just a win away from clinching the Cincinnati Open. That would definitely be a major confidence booster for her going into the US Open. 

She already won the Citi Open a month ago, followed by a quarterfinal exit in the Canadian Open against long-time doubles partner Jessica Pegula. The ongoing season has been filled with ups and downs for the American tennis prodigy.

Gauff was all emotional after her win over Swiatek in the Cincinnati Open semi-final. It was clearly very special for her, as, obviously, this was the first time that she defeated the World No. 1 after as many as 7 attempts. 

She talked about a wide variety of things in the post-match conference, including her mentality ahead of the match. The 19-year-old claimed that she just felt that she was going to win this match before stepping on the court. 

The American youngster also said that LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams are her biggest inspirations. “They’re the reasons I started playing tennis. Watching them fight day in & day out.. just their fight. Who they are on & off court. Also LeBron James,” she said. Coco will now face Karolina Muchova in the final who won her respective semi-final after a terrific battle against Aryna Sabalenka
