US Open 2023 has started its share of controversies right from Day 1. World No. 6 Coco Gauff, in her 1st round match, thrashed the chair umpire verbally for not reprimanding Laura Siegemund, claiming she was deliberately slow to get ready for Gauff’s serves. “She went over the clock like four times. You only gave her a violation once. How is this fair?,” yelled Gauff at the chair umpire.

She also called out the chair umpire Marija Cicak on calling the score “six seconds” after it was over. The American also pointed out there was no reason for Siegemund to take such long breaks since they were only playing very short points.

When the chair umpire retorted that Coco was too quick, she replied, “I’m going at a normal speed. Ask any ref here. I go a medium-paced speed.” She also responded that the German was “missing,” referring to her tardiness.

After a flustering match at Flushing Meadows, Coco Gauff defeats Laura Siegemund in three sets, following a quarrel-filled match. Though the German had won the first set, Gauff made a comeback, managing to win the remaining two.

While the match ran for nearly three hours, Siegemund putting up the best fight, it was ultimately Gauff who triumphed at the end. The match was interesting, not only with regards to the game played but also the quarrels.

Gauff will be facing Mirra Andreeva in the second round on 30 August. The seed No. 6 player has continued to prove her worth by putting on the best fight, advancing to the second round. She hopes to reach a better result here than she did last year when she was defeated in the quarter-final by Caroline Garcia.
