American World No.6 Coco Gauff‘s coach Brad Gilbert also works as a Sky Sports commentator. Due to that, the man himself has a busy schedule on and off the court around Flushing Meadows. With his player now cruised into the semi-finals of her home Grand Slam tournament, Gilbert must be a happy man for obvious reasons. Amidst all these, Gauff’s first-round victory was too controversial, mainly due to the behavior of Gauff’s opponent, the German player Laura Siegemund.

With Siegmund’s long delay while playing between the points being the main reason for the first-round encounter controversy, Brad Gilbert took a dig at her while commentating on her doubles match stating he would have loved to commentate on the other match which was going on in another court rather than watching the “slow game” of the German 35-year-old.

Gilbert said, “I see on your channels right there, I would switch to the British junior (playing on another court) Because Siegemund is playing doubles. And I promise you – Coco is playing after that – that will go for about four hours based upon [her taking] two minutes for every serve so I would definitely go to the British girl and then come back for Coco doubles. The American World No.6 Coco Gauff had her most difficult match in the first round against the German 35-year-old Laura Siegemund. The issues started in the first set itself when Siegemund was accused of taking too long between the points. Gauff now stated that her team asked this to be complained about in the first few games itself but she decided to let it be initially.

But when the German started taking long point breaks even during Gauff’s serve, keeping the American 19-year-old to wait, the encounter became heated up as expected. Gauff was then seen complaining to the chair umpire about the slow gameplay of the German unseeded player. After the match that was eventually won by Gauff, a lot of players have come up with allegations of poor sportsmanship by the German previously.

Anyway following the tough win in the first round, the American star has upped her level in the coming rounds and now she is just a match win away from her maiden US Open final. The hurdle left for her to reach the final is the Czech World No.10 Karolina Muchova.
