Teen sensation Coco Gauff empathized with fellow youngster Emma Raducanu after the latter’s frank admission that she sometimes wished she had never won the US Open because of the pressure that comes with achieving such a big victory at a tender age.

Emma Raducanu made history at the 2021 US Open when she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles title. Ranked a lowly No. 150 at the start of the tournament, Raducanu lifted the trophy remarkably without dropping a single set and in the process became the youngest women’s Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004.

Coco Gauff, ranked number 7 in the world, is currently competing in the Eastbourne International, the final warm-up tournament leading up to the Wimbledon Championships. In her press conference, the American was asked for her response to Raducanu’s recent comments.

Gauff offered words of support to Raducanu while acknowledging the constant media scrutiny on tennis players. The American also shed light on how she handles the constant media glare that comes with success at an early age.

Speaking to the press, Gauff said, “I think it’s just about your support system and taking it week by week. And for me, you hear a lot, so I think the best part is just to mute the noise and focus on myself and not focus on what other people are saying.”

The 19-year-old continued, “And yeah, I completely understand what Emma is going through. A lot of people will say a lot of things in the media and won’t come up to you directly and say it. Not just fans, but even like people commentating on matches and things, so I completely understand her point of view.”

Just like Raducanu, Gauff too had a fairytale start to her tennis career, reaching the fourth round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships at the age of just 15. Her triumph over five-time champion and compatriot Venus Williams is still being talked about. Gauff will face fellow American Bernarda Pera in the first round at Eastbourne, a picturesque town on Britain’s south coast. Coco, who is now a regular fixture in the WTA Top 10, is searching for her maiden Grand Slam title.
