American tennis sensation Coco Gauff recently confirmed talks between her father and renowned coach Rick Macci, who has previously worked with the Williams sisters. This potential partnership could be the key to unlocking Gauff’s full potential and working on the weaknesses in her game.
“I haven’t spoken to Rick personally. But, yes, him and my dad converse a lot. Not just now but over the years. Yeah, that (working with Rick Macci) was one of the options to do that after the season is over,” Coco Gauff said in the pre-Championships presser. “Obviously it’s far from now, so I can’t really confirm.”
Coco Gauff is having a relatively underwhelming season, with early-round exits at a host of tournaments. Her quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros comes as a saving grace to what has otherwise been a mediocre season for a player of her caliber. She will, however, take confidence from her semifinal appearance at the Rothesay Championships at Eastbourne, and hope to do well at Wimbledon. In the semis, Gauff lost to fellow American and eventual champion Madison Keys in straight sets.
The forehand problem of Coco Gauff
While Coco Gauff’s rise has been remarkable, her forehand has been identified as an area that needs improvement. Tennis experts and commentators have observed that opponents have started to exploit this weakness in her game. Rennae Stubbs, a former professional tennis player, and current commentator, has urged Gauff to work on her forehand to prevent opponents from targeting it. Gauff herself acknowledges the need for improvement and has expressed her intention to focus on her forehand during the off-season.
Rick Macci is no stranger to the world of tennis coaching. With a career spanning several decades, Macci has worked with some of the greatest players in the history of the sport. His list of former students includes Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, and Jennifer Capriati, among others.
Gauff plans to focus on her forehand during the off-season this year. With the guidance of a coach like Rick Macci, Gauff will have the chance to make significant strides in her development and address the weaknesses in her forehand.
Looking ahead, Gauff has her sights on making a deep run at this year’s Wimbledon. She has already achieved remarkable feats at a young age. This includes securing a number one ranking in doubles and reaching a Grand Slam final at the French Open 2022. With the guidance of coaches like Macci, the American has the potential to become a dominant force in women’s tennis.
