American tennis ace Coco Gauff is the reigning US Open champion. She is currently ranked third in the world. However, this was not always the case. Four years back, Gauff was among the emerging stars. While the talent was never an issue for Gauff, dishing out consistent performances was a challenge. Nevertheless, Gauff did pull off a memorable win against then-defending champion Naomi Osaka at the 2020 Australian Open.

The then 15-year-old American teen sensation had shocked Osaka to clinch a historic win. More than the win, Gauff’s review of her journey caught the attention of the fans. The American said that it was an unbelievable win for her.

Gauff remembered how she lost at the junior level a couple of years back and now playing at the Rod Laver Arena and beating the defending champion was not something she thought about.

I don’t know where that came from – maybe the crowd? What is my life like? Two years ago, I lost here first round in juniors, and now I’m here on Rod Laver Arena. This is crazy. I can’t believe this.
Coco Gauff had said after her win over Naomi Osaka.

Gauff defeated Elina Svitolina in the summit clash to clinch her first title of the season. Although it was the toughest of the matches Gauff played in Auckland, the 19-year-old held her nerves to successfully defend the title. Gauff beat Svitolina 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 in 2 hours and 23 minutes. The 19-year-old was elated after defending her crown.

This is the first time ever having to defend a title, so I'm really happy I was able to do it today. I'd like to congratulate Elina for an incredible week. What you do, being a mum and coming back so fast and at such a high level, is pretty inspiring. Hopefully -- not any time soon -- I'll be able to do it like you've done it.

The World No.3 will now enter the 2024 Australian Open high in spirits. And if stars align, Gauff might face Osaka once again but the difference this time will be that Osaka beating the American will be a talking point rather than the way round.

In case you missed!
