American teen Coco Gauff‘s poor display in the first round of Wimbledon has tennis fans fuming over her consistent lack of a winning mentality. In a match that was expected to be easy against the qualifier Sofia Kenin, Gauff was hit around in all corners. The final score was 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Her compatriot, 24-year-old Kenin, came to Wimbledon as a qualifier despite being a former Australian Open champion (won in 2020).

The former World No.4 looked in complete touch from the first set itself and the World No.7 Gauff took time to have her feet on the grass courts. Though she won the second set, the experienced Kenin showed what she is made of in the decider, hitting winners from both ends and eventually making the Gauff ship sink deep 6-2.

The 19-year-old American always struggled on grass courts. Her best performance here was her fourth-round appearances in 2019 and 2021. The teen was expected to make a deep run this year. But the poor display and getting knocked out in the first round itself has made the tennis Twitter go crazy as fans called her “overrated” and a “big-game loser”.

The American qualifier Sofia Kenin has the record of winning the Australian Open in 2020. She is also a finalist in the French Open 2020. The Covid pandemic and injuries gave a halt to her fast-growing career in the late 2020s. Kenin was even out of the top 200 rankings in 2022. Now she is trying to come back stronger at the age of 24 and is currently ranked 128.

The former World No.4 showed great tennis in beating her compatriot in the first round. If she can pull off the same performances in the coming rounds, it will be interesting. According to the projected draw, she will have to face the Polish World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals.

Her best-ever record in Wimbledon is a second-round appearance. It happened four times, including this year. She will face the unseeded Chinese 21-year-old player Wang Xinyu in the second round. Xinyu qualified for the second round after a straight-set win over the unseeded Australian Storm Sanders 6-3, 6-1.
