The quarter-final match of the 2024 Dubai Open between Anna Kalinskaya and Coco Gauff turned out to be an absolute thriller. After Gauff won the first set, the Russian made a sensational comeback in the second set to force a third and eventually earn a stunning victory.
During the first set, Kalinskaya had to take a medical timeout, which led many fans to believe that she was faking an injury as the Russian was losing at that time. However, she shut the fans up by making a brilliant comeback in the match against the American.
Coco Gauff has suffered with her form lately and the story continued at the Dubai Open as well. She defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round and Karolína Plíšková in the second round, despite losing the first set against her. However, the way Anna Kalinskaya dominated the American, it is clear that things haven’t been going her way of late.
Before heading into the Dubai Open, Gauff lost her first-round match in the Qatar Open against Karolina Siniakova and before that, she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final of the 2024 Australian Open. It is slightly ironic that, despite winning her first trophy of the season at the ASB Classic (which was the first tournament she played in 2024), there has been a meteoric dip in her form since then.

The initial reaction of fans when Anna Kalinskaya pleaded for a medical timeout was that she was probably faking her injury to hide her poor performance. Some also went to the extent of hoping that she gives a walkover so that Coco Gauff gets more time to relax ahead of her next match.
“Well a Kalinskaya Retirement would at least give Coco some extra rest for Swaitek. Coco and my future on her are gonna need it,” a particular fan wrote. Here are some of the other reactions:
However, the tables have changed totally since then, as Anna Kalinskaya made a sensational comeback in the match by winning the second round. Coco Gauff is the third seed in this tournament and was thus definitely the favorite to win this quarterfinal match. However, Kalinskaya did the job of silencing her doubters pretty well.
