Coco Gauff was crowned the new US Open champion, successfully ousting her Belarussian opponent, Aryna Sabalenka, out of the way. After her maiden Grand Slam triumph, Gauff had some lovely words for her father.

Coco Gauff kept her head in the game throughout her final-round match with soon-to-be World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka. Though she lost the first set, the teenager made a strong comeback to beat Sabalenka, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Following her match win, the 19-year-old shared that she saw her dad cry for the first time after she won the last game on Saturday. “He was the first person I saw. That was the first time I saw my dad cry. At the French Open, he claims he wasn’t crying. But today, I saw it. I rarely see my mom cry either. That moment. I’ll never forget that ever,” Gauff told ESPN.

“I’m so happy. That man has supported me through so much. People always tried to tear us apart, saying he didn’t need to be in my box or he didn’t need to coach me anymore,” she revealed. Gauff further admitted that her father was the reason she was able to win her final match.

Coco Gauff has become the third American teenager to claim the title of the US Open after Serena Williams did so at 17 years of age. Gauff is also the youngest American winner of the title since the turn of the century.

Gauff won her first-ever Grand Slam on Sunday, beating Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka. The 19-year-old has had a great run this year, especially in the past couple of months. Gauff won back-to-back titles at the Citi Open in Washington and went on to win the Cincinnati Open in Ohio as well.

Thanking her haters, Gauff said, “A month ago, I won a 500 title, people said I would stop at that. Two weeks ago, I won a Masters title, and people said that was as big as it was going to get. Three weeks later I’m here with this trophy right now”. “To those who thought they were putting water in my fire, they were adding gas to it. Now I’m burning so bright right now,” the American added.
