After a string of disappointments in the 2024 season so far, Coco Gauff finally has something to cheer about. The 19-year-old has been nominated for the 2024 Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award alongside Jude Bellingham, Linda Caicedo, Qin Haiyang, Josh Kerr, and Salma Paralluelo.
As Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam title last year, at the 2023 US Open at just 19 years of age, she has been included in this elusive list. Notably, the nominations for the Laureus World Sports Awards were announced at the historic Casa de Correos in Madrid, the headquarters of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid.
Many prominent personalities including the President of the Madrid Region, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, and the Mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida were present at the event. Six Nominees have been selected in each of the traditional seven Award categories by the 1,300 members of the Laureus Global Media Panel.
Apart from Coco Gauff, two other prominent tennis personalities have been nominated across different categories. While Novak Djokovic has been nominated for the Sportsman of the Year, Iga Swiatek is nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year Award.
A look at Coco Gauff’s season so far!
American WTA star Coco Gauff has had a hot and cold season so far. The 2023 US Open champion started her season with a title win in Auckland. Gauff then moved to the Australian Open and enjoyed a good run, reaching the semifinal.
However, she could not go the distance as Aryna Sabalenka ousted the American in straight sets. In the next two tournaments, Gauff’s performance took a hit as she had a second-round exit at the Qatar Open and lost to qualifier Anna Kalinskaya in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarterfinal.
Gauff got her act together at the Indian Wells Open as she reached the semifinal. But the US Open champion was shocked by Maria Sakkari as the Greek ace ousted her in three sets. The 19-year-old will now have her eyes set on Miami Open.
