American World No.6 Coco Gauff‘s poor display against Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the French Open has triggered Patrick McEnroe. The loss was by a score line of 4-6, 2-6. He openly criticized the American teen for not pushing herself enough against the World’s number one player. This was Gauff’s seventh loss against the Polish player in the same number of matches. Four were played on hard and three were on clay, but she was not able to get even a single win against her.

To this, McEnroe said on the Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe podcast, “Coco, because of this shakiness on her forehand wing, she kind of went to this play. This kind of play is where she was just being super consistent, playing with a lot of spin. It was good enough to get to the quarters and to stay in the match for a while in the first set but she had no real ability to hit big on the forehand.”

McEnroe continued, “And Swiatek, she can hurt you off both wings. Despite Coco being a great competitor, she is gonna have to shore up the forehand side to where she can play with safety and margin. But she can also attack. Right now, she’s kinda lost on what she wants to do. Gauff doesn’t feel like she can really go for the shots consistently because she makes too many errors.”
