Coco Gauff recently admitted that she learned her perfect serve from one of the best servers in the history of the game.
The 19-year-old star made Andy Roddick, a Grand Slam winner, part of her coaching team in August last year, and since then she has won the US Open and the Auckland Open.
Gauff added that the adjustment to her perfect serve made her motion during tournaments swift and more comfortable.
As per the young professional herself, it is advised to start up higher to make the toss more consistent than merely throwing from a low point.
That’s not all; continuing further, Gauff even asserted Andy Roddick as “one of the best servers in history,” especially when it comes to the American side.
It only took me, like, two days—maybe three—to get comfortable with it. It was just to make the toss more consistent. Instead of throwing from so low start up higher to make the toss more consistent. It was cool. He’s a chill guy. I met him before, but never to that level. I went to Charlotte for two days. It was a really good two days. I think that my service has improved. He's probably one of the best servers in history, especially on the American side. She told the Australian Open press.
In Auckland, the perfect serve saw Coco Gauff successfully defend a title for the first time in her career. She lost the first set to Elina Svitolina but she rallied back to beat the second seed, increasing her win streak at the event to 10.
Other than the final in Auckland, I think I served well. I hit probably the most aces I've hit consistently in matches or most unreturnables, I think I was at 80% or 90% first-serve points won. It was a good change. Hopefully I can continue that serving throughout.Continuing further, she added
Coco Gauff into the second round of the Australian Open
Coco Gauff began her Australian Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round.
It took the American star only one hour to brush off the Slovakian, making it her first slam match win as a major champion.
The 19-year-old who turns 20 in March has twice reached the round of 16 at Melbourne and would love to go into the quarterfinals this year after she was stopped by Jelena Ostapenko in 2023.
Before meeting Schmiedlova at the Australian Open, the US Open champion had beaten her twice in straight sets, including their fourth-round encounter at Roland Garros last June.
On the eve of the Australian Open commencement, Coco Gauff told reporters that she would love to double her digits of Grand Slam titles; perhaps this is the perfect time for her to prove that it’s not just going to be one major title.
