American World No.7 Coco Gauff recollects the early days of her career when she had to face a lot of consequences of being a Black girl. In a recent interview, she opened up on the days of struggle and how she managed to get through them all to become a world-class player as of now. Gauff is currently playing in the Washington Open in her home country and has moved to the second round after defeating another Black woman from her country-Hailey Baptiste.
Gauff told before her match against Baptiste, “I’m excited to play Hailey because when I was little there weren’t a lot of Black women in the lower categories. We had to deal with a lot of s**t you don’t know. For us, being here on the circuit today means a lot.”
Highlighting what it means of the representation, she continued, “I’m excited because it reminds me of the big dreams we had as girls and I hope Hailey and I play a lot more times to be that representation. I see a lot of girls in the stands and I hope it will be more and more common in our sport.”
Gauff will be looking to get back strong in the hard court swing after a poor show in Wimbledon. She had a tough draw where the opponent was former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin in the first round itself. With less preparation on the grass court, she ended up losing in the first round itself. Coco Gauff’s best record in the US Open is the quarter-final appearance last year
After a terrible show in the grass court season, the much-celebrated American teen will try to give her best in her home tournaments with a probable peak in the US Open. With the tour being less consistent lately, it will be interesting to see whether Gauff can dismantle the likes of top seeds like Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, or Elena Rybakina.
In the last tournament she played, Gauff struggled to keep her grasscourt game and the final score was 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Her compatriot, 24-year-old Kenin, came to Wimbledon as a qualifier despite being a former Australian Open champion (won in 2020). Her best Wimbledon result is fourth-round appearances in 2019 and 2021.
Gauff has currently moved to the second round of the Citi Open in Washington DC. She will be facing Swiss sixth seed Belinda Bencic in the upcoming round. She passed the opening round test in straight sets against unseeded compatriot Hailey Baptiste: 6-1,6-4.
