Coco Gauff revealed that she almost recreated the iconic ‘Steffi Graf moment’ where she was asked by a fan in the stands whether she would marry him and the German player replied by asking him ‘How much money do you have’, during one of her doubles matches in the 2023 WTA Finals. However, the youngster controlled her temptation with a particular fear in mind. 

Coco Gauff revealed in an exclusive interview with WTA Tennis:

It happened in the doubles yesterday. Someone said ‘will you marry me?’ I think it was Steffi Graf who said ‘How much money do you have?’ I almost wanted to recreate that moment. But if we had lost, people would’ve said ‘they lost because she said that,’ so I decided not to. But this was like the 2nd time that’s happened to me & I’ve been so tempted to recreate that moment.

The incident took place during the doubles match between the teams of Jessica Pegula-Coco Gauff and Erin Routiffe-Gabriela Dabrowski. Coco feared that if she recreated the Steffi Graf moment and lost the match, people might say that they did so because of her actions. The American duo ended up losing the match anyway, and that too in straight sets. Erin Routiffe and Gabriela Dabrowski won the match 7-6, 6-3.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula also have their singles matches to focus on. Coco Gauff has been placed in the same group as Iga Swiatek, Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur. She defeated Ons Jabeur in her first singles match of the 2023 WTA Finals pretty conveniently.

Coco Gauff feels ‘loved’ in Cancun

Coco Gauff revealed in her post-match conference that she feels loved by the crowd in Cancun. During her and Pegula’s doubles match and also during her singles match against Ons Jabeur, there were a lot of fans cheering for the youngster and she was definitely motivated by that.

Gauff said:

I was really surprised how many people were cheering for me. They had a little chant for me a couple times. And even yesterday in our doubles, we had a lot of support.

The 19-year-old will be playing her next match in the 2023 WTA Finals against Iga Swiatek. It will be a very important match in the context of the tournament, if Coco defeats Iga, her spot in the semifinals is almost confirmed.
