Coco Gauff spoke with Insider about her collaboration with Barilla ahead of the US Open. She dished out on her pre-match ritual that she has been following for years. The Cincinnati Open champion revealed that she always has pasta before her match.

The pasta always contains the same ingredients of penne, chicken, spinach, tomato sauce and to top it off some Parmesan Cheese. The 19-year-old prefers this pasta as she considers it stain-free and easiest to eat.

The American star tries to deviate from the norm sometimes by replacing the tomato sauce with pesto. However, the one ingredient that she actively avoids is mushrooms. A number of failures at tournaments compelled her to change her lucky recipe. She said “I do love mushrooms in pasta, I just don’t eat them pre-match,” She further added that they make her stomach hurt a little or she believes that maybe it is just in her head. The American teen said with a laugh “ I’m usually not superstitious — just with that.”

She explained thereafter that she tries to avoid dairy prior to her match although she can’t let go of cheese. But I cannot give up cheese,” she added. “I love cheese.”

One food item that she avoids not out of superstition but because it’s too heavy is red meat. Therefore she prefers to add chicken in her pasta. “Post-match it’s good, but right before, it can get a little heavy,” she said. “It’s weird prepping for matches — you want enough fuel, but not too much that you feel heavy.”
She later revealed that she likes to celebrate post-match with some burger, fries and diet coke.

Gauff has been a partner of Barilla since 2019 when she was just 14 years old. However, their relationship goes way before that. The World No. 6 and her parents have been fans of Barille’s pasta since forever. “When that opportunity came to work with them, and especially at that point in my career, I was not really a big name or anything, so it was a very lucky opportunity, the answer was a pretty much immediate yes because those are products that we already use,” Gauff said.

While she is gearing up for the US Open she will also be seen participating in the “Serving Love” campaign with Barille starting on August 23. In the campaign, people will have the opportunity to win free meals from Barille. Moreover, one person will be lucky enough to get one year’s worth of groceries.
