Young American sensation Coco Gauff failed to make it to the finals as she lost in the semi-finals. The teenager was up against the hard-serving Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the finals.
After a not-so-convincing victory against Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals, she was up against the defending champion herself, Aryna Sabalenka. Not able to bring out her best performance, Gauff continued to make service errors, which cost her the match.
After a dominant run throughout the tournament, she lost in straight sets. Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, she played her last tournament as a teenager. Having won a Slam in her teens, the American wanted to get to World No. 2 but fell just short of that.
By losing to Sabalenka, Gauff lost her clear ticket to become World No. 2. As a player who is constantly working on herself, Gauff reveals to be hard on herself and looks at the glass half empty instead of full. Highlighting her negatives, the 19-year-old tends to forget her records at a very young age, which shocked the world.
I don't know, I just feel like I look at the glass half empty, so I'm negative. Then I looked at that stat and I'm like they had great careers. So I'm like I'm in the right direction. I just have to remind myself of the journey and not so much of the moment.Said Coco Gauff to the Australian Open press after her loss.
Coco Gauff is extremely proud of herself as she looks back on her achievements since turning pro
Coco Gauff, one of the most promising talents on the Tour, lost her chance to become World No. 2 as she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Ending her best Australian Open run short, Gauff lost her last chance to win another Grand Slam as a teenager. However, that does not take away from her previous achievements.
Since turning pro, the American has improved year-wise. From reaching the quarter-finals in Grand Slams back in 2021, then the finals in 2022 before winning the title last year. Tending to be negative, Gauff reminds herself to look at the positive sides of her journey since turning pro and focuses on the journey more than the moment.
With sights on improvement, the American promises to return stronger after a hard loss. With this win, Aryna Sabalenka is one step closer to a successful title defense as she gears up to face Qinwen Zheng in the finals.
