Coco Gauff states that she can relate to the NBA Star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s post-match words where the Greek basketball player called a failure a ‘part of the process’. The tennis star found his words as a source of encouragement which applies to all players.

It’s not a failure; it’s steps to success. There’s always steps to it. Michael Jordan played 15 years, won six championships. The other nine years was a failure? That’s what you are telling me?“, he said at the press conference.

The American player exited the Madrid Open after her second-round defeat at the hands of Paula Badosa. She mentioned that the Greek player’s words were relatable as Roland Garro’s loss made her feel overwhelmed.

“I almost felt like if I didn’t win, it was a failure. After the Roland Garros[last year], it took me a long time to realize that tournament was a successful tournament for me. I was — not beat up — but really disappointed about it. Hearing that from one of the best players in the NBA right now shows that your career is a process,” she told at the press conference.

“Just because you lost doesn’t mean it was a failure. He’s right, there’s no failure in sports. You keep learning. In my personal opinion, the only failure is if you don’t work hard, then that’s a failure in itself. But the results? No. You’re always working towards a goal and as long as you’re trying, you either win or you learn. I truely believe that“, she further added.

The World No.6 won the Miami Open Women’s Doubles with her fellow compatriot Jessica Pegula. Her recent run at the Stuttgart Open was cut short in the round of 16 by Anastasia Potapova. As last year’s finalist in Roland Garros, the Teenage star is one of the strong contenders for the title.
