Chris Evert is one of the most influential figures in tennis history. The American tennis legend has won a total of 18 Grand Slam titles in Singles and was a force to be reckoned with before her retirement in the 1970s and 1980s. In a conversation with Rolex, she picked out two players to watch out for in the upcoming US Open.

Recently, Chris Evert while interacting with Rolex said, “It’s great to see so many young Americans doing well. Both Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff, who happen to be fellow Rolex Testimonies, have had some big wins throughout the calendar years and are definitely ones to watch on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.” The tennis star who has brought many laurels and fame to her country is known all too well for winning at the US Open on six occasions between 1975-1978 and 1980-1982.

Stating the reason why the home Slam was important for her, she said, “Playing at home was always so special due to the New York crowd and Arthur Ashe Stadium. While every year was different, there were new and exciting qualities in every tournament I played there. Winning six times in my home country is something that will always stay with me.”

Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz except being American Players and being familiar with their home ground are also in great form this season. Coco went on to bag the Cincinnati Masters title at the Western & Southern Open this year. Taylor went on till the Quarter-finals, eventually losing to none other than Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion of the Tournament. The American has achieved plenty of success at the Flushing Meadows herself, winning the title a whopping six times.

Chris Evert battled with ovarian cancer in 2021. Though an early diagnosis of the problem ensured that she got the proper treatment. She had to go through several rounds of chemotherapy. Post-chemo, the doctors predicted that there was a 90% chance of cancer not returning due to their quick action of seeing the doctor early.

Chris Evert was a very popular tennis figure back in the 70s and 80s. She is fondly remembered for her rivalry with fellow player Martina Navratilova. She was also the first player to reach 1000 victories in a singles event.
