Coco Gauff registered a phenomenal victory over Magdalena Fręch in the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.

In the on-court interview after defeating Magdalena Fręch, Gauff revealed an interesting superstition that is followed in her family now.

When she won her first-ever Grand Slam a couple of months ago at the 2023 US Open, Coco’s father, Corey Gauff, wasn’t sitting in the box because he was too nervous. The youngster revealed that it has been followed since then, and her father always sits in the stands somewhere where she can’t see him now.

My dad is here. I don’t know where. But he’s here somewhere. My mom does better at holding her nerves in the box. Sometimes my dad says some words that I can’t say right here. And then I hear them and I get mad. We agreed he can go say them somewhere else around here. If you guys see him tell him I said hello.
She said.
My dad is incredibly superstitious. Wimbledon was probably the last time I’ll ever see him in my box. I don’t think he’s ever coming back.

Kostyuk, who has had her struggles en route to the quarterfinals, is currently way behind Coco in the WTA rankings and has a rank of World No. 35.

However, she has performed pretty well in the tournament. She defeated Maria Timofeeva pretty comfortably in straight sets in the fourth round.

The two players have faced each other only once, back in the 2023 Adelaide International. In that match, Coco Gauff defeated the Ukrainian in three sets and she is expected to get a similar result in the upcoming match as well, unless Kostyuk causes a massive upset.
