Fans were quick to react when title favorite Coco Gauff was dumped out in straight sets in her semi-final match-up against compatriot Madison Keys at the Eastbourne International. The reaction of fans was even more palpable given that the 19-year-old American had recently made the bold claim that she was on the pathway to winning a Grand Slam.
For context, World No. 6 Gauff faced yet another setback in her grass court campaign leading up to the Wimbledon Championships following her shock defeat at the hands of Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in her second match at the recently held Berlin Open.
Following her impressive straight-sets victory over doubles partner and World No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of Eastbourne, a seemingly confident Coco remarked that she was “on the pathway” to winning a Grand Slam title.
The teenager could not build on her impressive win over Pegula, as she lost to another American, Madison Keys, 3-6, 3-6.

Fans react sharply to Gauff’s loss

As expected, tennis fans were less than forgiving in their reactions, given that Gauff had exuded confidence in winning a Grand Slam title just a day prior to her surprising defeat at the hands of World No. 23 Madison Keys. A few fans were far more brutal in their assessment of the result, going on to even label the youngster as “trash”.
Sharing a wide spectrum of negative reactions, here’s what fans have to say:
Coco Gauff, the 2022 Roland-Garros runner-up, is an incredibly talented youngster, but on more than one occasion her forehand has let her down, a fact that she herself acknowledges. Gauff, who at just 15 years of age made a sensational Wimbledon debut in 2019, defeating five-time champion Venus Williams, will be participating in her fourth Wimbledon this year.
Ever since her entry into the grandest stage of tennis, the young tennis star has had to bear the burden of expectations of taking over the baton from the Williams sisters. Although she has blossomed into a regular fixture in the WTA top-10 rankings, an elusive first Grand Slam title is what eludes her.
All being said, if Gauff is able to work on her forehand and improve her game, especially against heavy hitters, she should find herself in the reckoning to win a Grand Slam title. Along with the likes of the fearsome trio of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina.
