American young tennis sensation Coco Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam title in New York as the 19-year-old beat Aryna Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final. After a first-round exit at the 2023 Wimbledon, Gauff made a turnaround winning her maiden WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati. Many credited her success to Brad Gilbert and Pere Riba, but the latter has revealed that it was Gauff’s father, Corey Gauff, who actually helped the 19-year-old go the distance.

Riba revealed that while he and Gilbert worked on the tennis part, Corey, being Gauff’s coach since the time she picked up the racket, pulled the strings from the backend. The Spaniard also revealed how he and Gilbert worked things out to keep Corey Gauff in the scheme of things even after he gave up the coaching role after the French Open.

Riba went on to credit Coco Gauff’s father for the youngster’s success, who became one of the youngest American to win the US Open title. The 19-year-old came from a set behind in the final to eventually win it in three sets and win her first-ever Grand Slam.

“We created routines, and things are working well. It was a situation of one routine we were bringing for a long time was working, and just wanted to continue that routine. Don’t change the things when things are working well. Dad is the person that is leading the team, is the most important person for Coco that is creating all the atmosphere, Corey. He is the most important guy, and the success of Coco is because Corey is there,” said Riba to Essentially Sports.
