“Could’ve made a different decision” Matteo Berrettini’s coach unhappy with Wimbledon’s ban and its severe ill effect on his ward

Wimbledon had announced the ban on Russian and Belarusian players due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and due to the unfairness of the ban on the players belonging to those countries, the ATP and WTA decided to strip Wimbledon of its ranking points to ensure fairness. This move was also levied with the expectation that Wimbledon will overturn its decision and the ban would be lifted, but AELTC didn’t budge.

As the Championship was stripped of its ranking points, the players who earned the ranking points with great performances in Wimbledon 2021, will suffer a huge setback in terms of ranking points and their rankings will take a nosedive. The biggest casualties of this ranking setback will be Novak Djokovic, the Champion in 2021 who will fall to number 7 in the world from world number 1.

Matteo Berrettini, the world number 10 and the runner-up will also slip down below the top 20 due to the ban. His coach has expressed his regrets regarding the same. He said: “The charm of Wimbledon is indisputable. It is a special place for him where he left so many good memories. Even the less passionate about this sport discovered Matteo thanks to the results obtained at Wimbledon.”

Matteo Berrettini was in a stellar form in 2021, winning the Queen’s Club Championship and then made it to the final of Wimbledon 2021, earning 1700 ranking points with the two tournaments, and even if he manages to repeat the same feat again, and win the Wimbledon as well, he would still lose 1200 ranking points. So, the decision of stripping points from Wimbledon is also affecting a lot of players.

Matteo’s coach talked about what he thought about Wimbledon’s decision to impose the ban. He said: “Wimbledon is a tournament that makes its own history. I tell you that perhaps a different decision could have been made, other than stripping the points. It’s not easy to change your mind about an event of this magnitude that has instilled in your DNA a very different mentality than others. I strongly doubt that they’ll change their mind.”
