The Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is reported to miss the Indian Wells and Miami Open due to his injury. Kyrgios was all set to make his comeback this season at the Australian Open.
However, with doubts over his fitness, he withdrew from the tournament. The former No. 13 is now reported to even miss the ATP Masters 1000 due to his fitness concerns.
In the last two years, Kyrgios played just one match at the Stuttgart Open before he again tore his ligament. Kyrgios could have used his protected ranking until March 2024.
Obviously had a really tough year with injury, had that knee surgery and came back a little bit too soon and set me back a little bit, then obviously had some wrist issues.Kyrgios said on his subscription website OnlyFans after withdrawing from the Australian Open.
For context, Kyrgios missed two consecutive Australian Opens in his career due to injury. And it will be a big setback for the immensely talented player. In his absence from the tournament, Alex de Minaur is leading the Australian men’s charge in the tournament.
Even though Kyrgios won’t be playing in the tournament, he will be involved in the commentary team with ESPN.
Nick Kyrgios to return in 2024 Wimbledon?
As reported by Freelancer John Horn on Twitter, Nick Kyrgios will aim for a comeback during the grasscourt season.
The former World No. 13 had a superb run at Wimbledon prior to his injury in 2022. This was the time when he had the golden run to the finals of Wimbledon and was defeated by none other than the tennis legend Novak Djokovic himself.
As expected, it is heartening for his fans to see Kyrgios in such a situation. Moreover, from a tennis perspective, it is a setback for the sport. Especially a player of his stature who is a power boat in himself is losing the prime years of his career.
