American tennis star Danielle Collins finally got her hands on a Masters title as she beat last year’s runner-up Elena Rybakina in the 2024 Miami Open final on Saturday. The 30-year-old who had won just two titles before this and had recently announced that the 2024 season would be her last, beat World No. 4 Rybakina in straight sets and it was all emotions after that.

Collins broke into tears right after she hit the winner in the second set. The American was brimming with joy and happiness as could be seen from her face. Collins somehow recollected herself and got back up to shake hands with her opponent and the chair umpire.

Danielle Collins remembers the time she begged to come to Miami Open

After her win, it was evident that Danielle Collins was emotional. The 30-year-old who had just won her third tour-level title and first-ever WTA 1000 title thanked the crowd for their support throughout the match. Collins then also recalled how she begged her father to take her to the Miami Open.

The 30-year-old revealed that she used to beg her father to bring her to this Masters tournament and she was told that she could only go when she gets selected to play.

To play in my home state, at a tournament I used to watch on TV as a kid—my dad said, ‘If you’re not playing in the tournament you’re not going,’ so I had to work really hard to get here. And to come out here and feel like I’m playing in front of thousands of my best friends, and everybody that was pushing me to get over this hurdle today, it just meant the world.

Notably, it was a historic win for Collins as she became just the second unseeded woman ever to win the Miami Open, after Kim Clijsters, who also won it unseeded in 2005. Also, the 30-year-old is the lowest-ranked woman ever to win the Miami Open, surpassing Clijsters’ ranking of No. 38 in 2005.

Collins was in supreme form throughout the tournament as she dropped only one set and that too in the first round. After that, the American beat Anastasia Potapova (No. 30), Sorana Cirstea (No. 19), Caroline Garcia (No. 23), Ekaterina Alexandrova (No. 14) and ultimately Elena Rybakina (No. 4) but did not drop a set. She won the final 7-5, 6-3.
