“I did that against Novak when he was aiming for Calendar Slam,” Daniil Medvedev backs himself for Grand Slam glory in the upcoming season
Daniil Medvedev
Russian former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev who had a disappointing 2022 season is ready to take his revenge in 2023. The Russian superstar who was just a set away and just a point away from breaking Rafael Nadal in the third set of the Australian Open had a steep downfall ever since. The current world number 7 who stopped the Serbian great Novak Djokovic from winning the calendar slam in 2021 was just able to win 2 titles this year.
Nevertheless, the Russian has regarded this season as a lesson for the coming years and he said in a recent interview that the Spanish young world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz has inspired him with his elite clutch performances. In his words”When you are confident after winning games, you are more of a favorite for a Grand Slam. Still, before the US Open, Alcaraz wasn’t playing his best tennis but with the talent and game he has, he was able to do it.“
He also spoke about how he thinks of himself despite the poor show this season, “I know I’m capable of winning Grand Slams because I did that against Novak when he was aiming for the Calendar Grand Slam at the 2021 US Open“
The former US Open champion continued his train of thought on how he sees himself, “That’s what I think of myself. I know I can play good tennis, I know I can beat anybody on a good day. I know I have it in me, I just have to find a way to do it more often than in 2022”. (Source: We love Tennis, translated via Google)
The Russian who became the world number 1 ranked player in February 2022 ended the season winning just 2 ATP titles(Vienna Open, Los Cabos) and ranked at number 7.
Daniil Medvedev’s disappointing 2022 season
After the heartbreaking loss to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open Final this year after leading by two sets, Medvedev has never been the same player as before. The deadliest backhands that stopped the mighty Novak Djokovic in US Open final in 2021 have declined since the loss to Nadal this year.
Nevertheless, he was returning to his best in recent months but the pre-quarterfinal loss to Nick Kyrgios in US Open, 2022 again stopped his momentum. Following that, he recently got defeated by the Swiss Veteran Stanislas Wawrinka in the ATP-250 Metz Open in 3 sets in the first round.
All losses apart, he was dictating the play in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic in ATP-500 Astana Open, a muscle strain got him down and he was forced to retire from the match. Medvedev was leading by a set and the second set was being played when he got the strain.
After that unfortunate event, Vienna Open was the first tournament he played. He started exactly from where he stopped at the Astana Open and went on to win the whole tournament. The former world number one has enjoyed a dominant week in Vienna as the Russian produced tennis of the highest quality in a straight-sets victory over Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals. Then in the semi-finals, he defeated Grigor Dimitrov again in straights.
The final against the Canadian was the only match of the tournament where he lost his serve which eventually led to the loss of that set. After a great run at Vienna, Nobody expected the Russsian to crash out in earlier rounds in Paris but the Australian 23-year-old has proven the tennis world wrong.
This was followed by the poor show in the ATP finals, Turin where the Russian crashed out on the Round Robin stage itself after all his three matches.
