Russia’s Daniil Medvedev will be up against Arthur Fery in the first round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on July 3. Ahead of his match at the All-England Club, Medvedev talked in length about his run at the tournament in the previous editions. He accepted his slim chance to win the trophy because he finds this Grand Slam event tough by recalling that he could make it to the fourth round only.
The Russian has an 8-4 record at the grass-court Grand Slam. He made his Wimbledon debut back in 2017 but did not enjoy a smooth run in that season. His best performance in the tournament came during the 2021 edition when the Russian ace reached the fourth round.
“For the moment, Wimbledon is the Grand Slam where I have my worst result, [reaching the] fourth round. Roland Garros is quarter-finals. So, I for sure want to change it. I feel like I’m capable of playing well [at Wimbledon], but like always there are a lot of tough opponents that don’t want to show my best there,” Medvedev told ATP.
The 27-year-old then talked about how he feels after arriving at Wimbledon and seeing the grass court. “[It is] unbelievable to be there every time you come. You step on the grounds, and you know even you come in the player lobby, straightway you see grass all around, and perfectly cut. You just feel, ‘Well, here I am at Wimbledon and it’s a great feeling’, and I will be happy to experience it this year,” he added.
Daniil Medvedev was banned from playing at Wimbledon last year

Daniil Medvedev did not feature at the Championships last year due to Wimbledon’s ban on Russian and Belarusian players after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Though he struggles on the grass, the hard court suits him perfectly. The Russian has won five titles (four on hard courts and one on clay) this season and has a win-loss record of 41-8 across all the surfaces in 2023.
Talking about the 2023 Wimbledon, Medvedev will open his campaign in the round-round against 389th-ranked player Arthur Fery. The duo has never faced each other so their head-to-head record stands at 0-0. He will be arriving at the tournament after his quarterfinal loss to Roberto Bautista Agut at the Halle Open. It will be interesting to watch how Medvedev fares in the upcoming tournament.
