Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev received a walkover in his fourth-round match against Czech player Jiri Lehecka, as the latter suffered injuries mid-match. In the post-match press conference that followed, Medvedev spoke at length about the variation in his demeanor on and off the court. He spoke about what really makes him tick on the tennis court.

“I honestly think that the player, let’s say interviews after the match, are more me in real life. Very different persons in many aspects. Of course, it’s the same me so there are some similarities and connections. But on the court, if we’re talking only about a tennis match, I’m much more passionate,” he said.

Daniil Medvedev describes his off-court demeanor as rather easygoing and says that he feels very passionate when competing on the tennis court. However, he clarified that the passion need not always be palpable, as is the case for tennis legend Rafael Nadal. He prefers to show less animated reactions to winning or losing points. It stands in stark contrast to Nadal’s philosophy of playing every point like it’s your last.

He said, “Maybe I’m not like Rafa screaming C’mon and trying to pump the crowd up, but very hot-blooded. ‘Hot-blooded’ is a good word. Whereas in real life it’s tougher to bring emotions for me. I’m much more like, Whatever. Whatever happens, happens. More easygoing.”

Medvedev has expressed confidence in his grass-court game. He also made sure to thank the Wimbledon crowd for backing him in all his matches, including the first-round matchup against British player Arthur Fery.

“As I said, starting from when I walked on Court 1 playing against a British player, it was amazing. It helps you. When the crowd is in a way behind you, for sure not disrespectful, it helps a lot to feel great on the court. I feel like it’s true that it’s well connected. So, I want to try to continue this way because actually just saw my opponent also very well connected to the crowd. Going to be interesting,” he said.

It deserves mention that since his break-through on the tennis landscape in 2019, Medvedev has been an approachable and friendly colleague to most players on the ATP tour. He is someone the players themselves look up to.

Medvedev is set to face in-form American Christopher Eubanks in what will be his first quarterfinal appearance at the prestigious major. He will hope to make good use of his form to go even deeper in the tournament.
