Daniil Medvedev fires harsh words towards Alexander Zverev and the jeering crowd at Monte Carlo following third-round win
Daniil Medvedev advanced into the next round by beating Alexander Zverev but not before his own fair share of controversies at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev has a love-hate relationship with the crowd. He has been the target of the crowd many times. His bold and fearless demeanor and mocking statements directed at the crowd have not helped him gain even slight affection from the audience and media. Also, his Russian nationality does not help him either.
However, this time the Russian decided to take on the crowd, head-on. In his Round of 16 match against Alexander Zverev at the Monte-Carlo Masters, he decided not to start playing till the crowd does not stop jeering. Medvedev remained adamant about his decision and in the end, the chair umpire had to request the audience to stay quiet to start the proceedings.
“Medvedev on the crowd in Zverev match: “I’m like ok, I’m not going to play til you guys shut up. I just discussed the mark. There’s nothing to complain about. After AO Final I was like ‘You can do whatever but I won’t play til you stop.’ As long as there’s sound I won’t play,” the caption read.
However, in a tough match, Daniil Medvedev was able to beat Alexander Zverev 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7).

Daniil Medvedev wards off Alexander Zverev threat
Alexander Zverev gave the current World No.5 a run for his money. He was fierce and attacked Daniil Medvedev with complete zeal. He was looking to finish the match quickly and even had two awesome opportunities to do so, but he let it slip.
The German could have won the match in the second or third set. He was leading 5-4 and served at match points on both occasions. However, he could not take advantage of that situation and allowed Daniil Medvedev to crawl back into the game. He won the second set 7-5 and took the third set into a tie-breaker.
“That was a crazy match. He served two times for the match, he probably should have done better, but that is also clay courts. I tried to watch a lot of tennis before playing this tournament, and one thing that I saw is you can come back at any moment. The serve doesn’t count as much, so as soon as someone gets a little bit tight, the match can turn around in one second. That’s what I managed to do,” the Russian said analyzing his victory.
Daniil Medvedev will take on Holger Rune in the next round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2023.
