Former US Open champion and World No. 3, Daniil Medvedev clashed with the top seed, Carlos Alcaraz at the semi-finals of the US Open on Friday. Though Medvedev won the match, he had yet another negative altercation with the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Medvedev demolished World No. 1, Alcaraz, in a four-set thriller. Though the Spaniard tried his level best, he could only win the third set and faced a crushing defeat in the remaining three. The Open crowd, which seemed to be full of the defending champ’s supporters, kept yelling in between the matches to vex the Russian. Overcoming the disruption caused by the ‘disrespectful’ crowd, the 27-year-old emerged victorious with a score of 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 over Alcaraz.

The spectators at the stadium consisted of an overwhelming majority of Alcaraz’s fans. They became a constant source of frustration for Medvedev, especially after the end of the first two sets. The ‘disrespectful‘ crowd yelled in between the Russian’s serves. Medvedev, though, who is not new to dealing with a negative crowd, handled the situation with grace. He has had similar instances with the general crowd in the past as well.

During the fourth set, when the Russian was just one game away from winning the match and ousting Alcaraz out of the stadium, he took a moment to give a sarcastic ‘thumbs-up’ to the crowd.

Post-match, while the Spaniard went over to pack up his belongings, the third seed moved to the center of the court, gesturing to the crowd to ‘cheer louder’ and that he couldn’t hear them well enough. He stood there for a while, listening to the cheers of the crowds, before getting back to his bench.

Daniil Medvedev will next be seen across the net from none other than the former World No.1, Novak Djokovic himself. The two will clash for the 2023 US Open title on Sunday. This will give the Serb an excellent opportunity to take revenge on his Russian opponent for his 2021 championship loss at the Flushing Meadows.

Speaking to a reporter about how he plans to take on the 36-year-old, the 27-year-old said, “The challenge is that you play a guy who won 23 Slams. I have only one,” explaining why repeating his 2021 feat is difficult. He further explained, “When I beat him here, I managed to play better than myself. I need to do it again. There’s no other way.”
