It was a battle of the former World No.1s at the final round-robin match at Turin. In a rematch of the US Open 2023, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev met on the court once again. However, this time, it was the Spaniard who won the match, quite dominantly.

Alcaraz registered a straight-set victory against Daniil Medvedev, solidifying his claim for the semi-final spot. He will be facing World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the next stage of the tournament. However, it is noteworthy that Alcaraz defeated Medvedev, who stopped him from defending his title at the US Open. The semi-final of the US Open was an extraordinary display of skill from both parties. However, only one player could win. In a match that ran to exhausting four sets, Medvedev won, crushing the Spaniard’s dream of defending his crown.

Medvedev applauded his Spanish opponent for learning from his mistake at the US Open. The self-proclaimed ‘Master of hard courts’ claimed that one needs to be excellent at the net if one wants to defeat him. The Russian said:

I don't think that just going to the net is a great strategy against me. You have to be very good at the net to beat me.

Both players are some of the best players on the tour at the moment. They have had quite a few well-matched battles over the last couple of years. The Russian was appreciative of Alcaraz’s skill at the net. The former US Open champ continued:

Carlos hits volleys like maybe two or three players can do. He came to the net 50 times at the US Open and lost.

While it is true that Alcaraz played some of his best tennis at the US Open semi-final, it was his opponent who won. However, the ATP Final was the perfect revenge for the Spaniard as he defeated Medvedev in straight sets. Nevertheless, this loss does not threaten the Russian’s future at the tournament.

Both Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz move to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals

Despite both players losing a match at the round-robin stages at the ATP Finals, they move on to the semi-final of the event. While Medvedev will aim for a second title at the tournament, Alcaraz would like to finish off his debutant season-ender in style.

Daniil Medvedev was having a flawless campaign at the ATP Finals. He had two set winners against both Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev. This guaranteed a semi-final spot. However, his streak came to an end with a loss to Carlos Alcaraz, this too in straight sets. Nevertheless, Medvedev will move on to the semi-final, where he will be meeting Jannik Sinner. It will be a tough match indeed, with Sinner winning the last two of their last encounters.

Carlos Alcaraz on the other hand, started his campaign with disappointment. He had lost to Alexander Zverev in a three-set thriller. However, this did not matter, for the Spaniard won his next two matches in straight sets. This sent him straight to the semi-finals. There he will be facing Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
