Daniil Medvedev’s run in the 2023 French Open was cut short as he got knocked out by 172nd-ranked Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round itself. Having recently won the Italian Open, big things were being expected of Medvedev even on clay. But the World No.2 is still not used to getting clay in his mouth and is happy every time the clay court season comes to an end.
Medvedev’s match against Seyboth Wild lasted for over four hours. “Every time the clay court season finishes I’m happy. So I’m happy. I’m happy again. Doesn’t matter, one time quarters, one time fourth round, a lot of times first round,” said Medvedev in the postgame presser. His opinion about clay surely has not changed, even after all these years.
Medvedev mentioned the windy and dry conditions which led him to have a mouth full of clay. “I don’t know if people like to eat clay, to have clay in their bags, in their shoes, the socks, white socks. You can throw them to the garbage after the clay season. Maybe some people like it. I don’t,” added the Russian. He was just happy to be done with the clay court season and the first-round exit did not seem to bother him much.
Daniil Medvedev also congratulated Seyboth Wild and expressed that the Brazilian played really well. Medvedev mentioned that Seyboth Wild has the potential to make it into the Top 30 if he keeps playing like this.
Holger Rune compares Daniil Medvedev to a chess player
Holger Rune, who made it to the finals of the Italian Open, expressed that Daniil Medvedev’s mind was in a league of its own. According to Rune, Daniil Medvedev is like a chess player.
HRune praised Medvedev’s ability to make his opponents ‘play in different situations’. Daniil Medvedev would later proceed to beat Rune to win the 2023 Italian Open.
Holger Rune has already made it past the first round of the 2023 French Open. He is set to face the French player, Gaël Monfils, in the second round. Medvedev’s run to the French Open was cut short after his shocking defeat in the first round.
