Daniil Medvedev will be looking forward to correcting his record of failing to win ht same title twice at the upcoming ATP Finals to be played in Turin, Italy next week. The World No.3 previously won the year-end championship in 2020 when he got the better of Dominic Thiem in straight sets. The Russian became just the fourth man to defeat the world’s top-three-ranked players en route to a title.

The 27-year-old recently sat down with ATP Tour‘s Arthur Kapetanakis to deliberate on his season so far and his disappointing performance at the tournament last year. The Russian no.1 went 0-3 last season in Turin, losing all three of his matches in decisive tie-breaks.

But, Medvedev’s experience on the biggest stage has helped him learn how to ride the lows. He said:

I feel definitely maybe a little bit less pressure, because before I won [the 2020 title], I lost three matches in a row. But at the same time, tennis is such a… let's call it a cyclic thing. Last year, I lost three matches, and three of them were really close in the decisive tie-break, I think two of them I was serving for the match.

Medvedev has had a fairly successful season, winning 5 titles in addition to reaching 4 finals. The World No.3 has a fantastic year win-loss record of 64-16. At the recently concluded Paris Masters, the Russian suffered a disappointing second-round defeat against Grigor Dimitrov. He said:

I started the year very strongly by winning the first two 500s I played in Rotterdam and Dubai, so that opened a big gap on a lot of players and I have managed to finish strong at the end here in Vienna

Daniil Medvedev to face Andrey Rublev to kickstart his campaign in Turin

Earlier, the 27-year-old said that if he had managed to get the better of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the final of US Open this would probably have been his best season so far.

Medvedev is hoping to replicate his 2020 campaign as he kickstarts his 2023 edition with an encounter against his Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev. The Russian pair have been drawn with Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev for the round-robin stage.

So for sure this year coming there, I want to try to be better. And that's exactly what happened a couple of years ago, when I managed to win it. So let's hope it's going to be the same story

The 5th-seeded Russian arrives in the tournament on the back of a close semi-final defeat against Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters. Rublev won his first Masters title in Monte Carlo earlier this year. The 26-year-old battled back from 1-4, 0/30 in the third set to defeat Holger Rune in the final.
