Daniil Medvedev receives sympathy from top journalist as he backs the Russian for another deep run in the Australian Open next year
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev started the 2022 season very well. He played in the final of the 2022 Australian Open which he lost. He also played in the semi-final round match of the Mexican Open but again lost to Rafael Nadal. He also gained the World No.1 ranking.
But soon his season began to become from bad to worse. He was knocked out of the Indian Wells Open and subsequently lost his No.1 spot. He had to sit out of the French Open and the Wimbledon due to an injury and a ban on Russian players respectively.
He did win the Los Cabos Open and the Vienna Open. He also qualified for the 2022 ATP Finals but could not win a single match in Turin. He also dropped many points to finish the year as World No.7. Although Daniil Medvedev had a difficult season, critics are not ready to write him off as yet. Chris Oddo, a respectable journalist thinks that the Russian will return to the ATP tour stronger next year.
“I’m looking forward to the return of Medvedev, who has become kind of an unlucky loser with eight straight losses to the top 10, not finding a way to finish games, but he has shown he’s in the game, in my opinion, against Djokovic in Turin. I think with a little more commitment he can come back to the fore and play an important role.
“I think you can put this season down to bad luck, maybe he wasn’t fully emotionally fit, the Wimbledon ban was big, what’s going on in Russia, I think the impact this has on him can never be overstated. It must be extremely difficult for a Russian athlete right now. I believe a lot in Medvedev. He proved so many things, doing what he did against Djokovic at the US Open. He has that level of confidence.
“I think he just needs a good result to come to him. I expect him to fight for the big titles. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the Australian Open final again next year,” he said in an interview.
Can Daniil Medvedev win 2023 Australian Open?
Daniil Medvedev has reached the final of the Australian Open twice and that too consecutively. He reached for the first time in 2021. He was defeated by Novak Djokovic in straight sets. He made it again in 2022, but this time lost to Rafael Nadal. Will the third time, he be lucky?
The Russian has everything to play for in the 2023 season. He has to gain his respect and reputation back. But the Australian Open will be a challenge for him. Considering the fact, Daniil Medvedev never won here despite coming so close will play on his mind.
Also, Novak Djokovic is going to make a re-entry into the first Grand Slam of the year after a full-year break and his career’s 6th ATP Finals tournament triumph. World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to prove his mettle and so does defending champion Rafael Nadal.
The challenge of playing against youngsters is also imminent and growing. Alexander Zvererv, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas have proved this season how good they are.
Daniil Medvedev has got enough time to introspect about his failures and shortcomings in the 2022 season. Hopefully, he will learn from them and play well next year.
