Daniil Medvedev always shows his humorous side during interviews after matches. He was in his element again after breezing past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday (January 20, 2024).
The Russian won his third-round match without breaking a sweat. It took around two hours to beat the Canadian with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Before beating Aliassime, Medvedev’s clash against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round did not finish before 3:40 a.m. So he went to bed at 7 a.m. and woke up at noon to face Aliassime. And that’s exactly what the 27-year-old talked about.
After beating Aliassime, he spoke about the importance of sleep and further recounted how he used to be a night owl during his early career, which helped him deal with the unmanageable sleep schedule.
I was not playing as I’m playing now, but maybe some practices without sleep, sometimes, helped me play today.Medvedev said after the match
At least I have this super ability — I can sleep where I want whenever I want.He added:
Daniil Medvedev had a grueling encounter with Emil Ruusuvuori
In the second set on January 18, Daniil Medvedev faced Emil Ruusuvuori in a match that lasted four hours and 23 minutes. Medvedev, the third seed, got thumped by the Finnish player in the first two sets.

The Russian, however, despite the late hours, made a comeback to win with a score of 3-6, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), and 6-0. Because the match finished late, the organizers of the Australian Open received flak from the fans. Medvedev, however, said this match will stay in his memory.
The Russian hit 51 winners and 63 unforced errors. According to him, he missed a lot in the first set and played better when he changed his racquet and stayed with it until the end of the match.
Medvedev started his campaign in Melbourne with a win over Terence Atmane, before facing Ruusuvuori and Felix Auger-Aliassime. He will be meeting Nuno Borges in the fourth round on Monday (January 22).
Last year at the Australian Open, Medvedev could not progress to the fourth round because Sebastian Korda easily defeated him in straight sets (7-6, 6-3, 7-6). The 27-year-old has not yet won a title in Melbourne but has played in the final two times (in 2021 and 2022). Overall, Medvedev has won one Grand Slam title, the US Open in 2021.
