Russian tennis ace Daniil Medvedev is a temperamental player and his emotions often get the worst out of him. An example of the same was on display during his second-round match at the 2024 Australian Open against Emil Ruusuvuori when Medvedev smashed his racket out of frustration. The Russian lost his cool midway through the match and smashed his racket onto the court.

As the match had too many ebbs and flows, Medvedev found it tough to cope with it and hence lost his cool. The Russian, however, managed to power through and enter the third round as he beat Ruusuvuori in a five-set thriller.

Medvedev beat his Finnish counterpart 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 in four hours and 23 minutes, but not before Ruusuvuori had pushed Medvedev to the edge. The World No.53 took the first two sets and left Medvedev frustrated. This resulted in the Russian smashing his racket.

Quite obviously, Medvedev received a warning for this code violation. The Russian then got his act together and won the next three sets to save himself from an embarrassment.

Daniil Medvedev through to the fourth round

While Daniil Medvedev had a meltdown in his second-round match, the Russian ace made no mistakes in his third-round match against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The third seed defeated Auger-Aliassime in straight sets to enter the fourth round in Melbourne.

Medvedev won 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 against the 27th-seed Canadian in two hours and nine minutes. The win was special because the Russian played without sleep as his second-round match finished at around 4 in the morning.

When I was very young maybe til 21, I was going out. It wasn’t good for my tennis. I wasn’t playing as I’m playing now. But maybe some practices without sleep sometimes helped me play today. Let’s hope it was like this.
Daniil Medvedev joked after his win over Auger-Aliassime.

Medvedev will next face Nuno Borges in the fourth round. The Portuguese is coming on the back of an emphatic win against 13th seed Grigor Dimitrov.

If Daniil Medvedev manages to go past Borges, which he is expected to, the Russian will meet either Hubert Hurkacz or Arthur Cazaux in the quarterfinals. And if all goes well, another Carlos Alcaraz vs. Daniil Medvedev Grand Slam semifinal will be on the cards.
