In the dynamic realm of professional tennis, the race for the top spot is always on. A player has to work hard to get to the number one spot but holding the spot for long is an even bigger task due to the lurking competition. Currently, Novak Djokovic is at the top of the table after a memorable victory at the US Open. However, his rival Carlos Alcaraz is right behind him who is eager to snatch his position back.
Russian Star, Daniil Medvedev believes that Carlos will finish the year at the top of the table. In a recent interview, Medvedev revealed his goals by the end of the year. “I don’t think Novak will play too many tournaments, so logic indicates that Carlos would have to finish as #1 at the end of the year,” said Medvedev to the Press.
“Everywhere I go I seek to become champion, so the dream of being number 1 remains alive. But I know I am very far away & that my fight must be more about trying to finish in the top 2 & staying close to the top to be able to attack it at the beginning of 2024.” continued Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev advances to the round of 16 of the China Open
The 2023 China Open is underway and US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev wins his first match against Tommy Paul in straight sets to advance to the round of 16. The final score was 6-2, 6-1 as Medvedev looks to take his form forward and hopes to end his year as number 2 in the rankings. The Russian is seeded as number 2 in the tournament and already started his run with a dominating win in the Diamond Court. He had a total of 9 Aces with 85% of the total first points won. The American only managed 45% of his service points which wasn’t enough to beat the Russian in form.
However, Carlos Alcaraz has also had a remarkable year so far and looks to end the year with a high and get his number 1 position back from the Serb. At the US Open, Medvedev beat the Spaniard in an electric match. Fans are awaiting a Carlos-Medvedev rematch and the winner will improve their points and end high on the ranking system.
