The hot and humid conditions of the US Open are getting out of hand now and it is taking a toll on the quality of the matches and the players. During the quarterfinal between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz, both players were fully drenched in sweat. Djokovic went on to address the conditions in the on-court interview after theories of Fritz getting preferential treatment circulated on social media.
Medvedev, who took on fellow Russian Andrey Rublev in his quarterfinal match at the US Open, was visibly struggling during the match. He had to take two medical timeouts and was seen using an inhaler during the breaks, which clearly showed that he was not in his best state during the match. Although he managed to win his quarterfinal match against Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets, he kept on complaining about the conditions. “One day a player gonna die and they gonna see,” Medvedev said during the match.
Seeing the horrible temperature and humidity conditions, tournament referee Jake Garner brought in a new rule to partially close the roofs of the main stadiums when the temperature crosses 86.2 F. It was done ahead of the match between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz as well. However, the two players were still struggling a lot during the match.
The problem with the stadiums at the US Open is that although their roofs can be closed fully, they are not fully air-conditioned. A new chilled water ventilation system controls the humidity when the roof is closed in Arthur Ashe Stadium. But the temperature condition might worsen which is not worth being risked. Moreover, it takes over 7 minutes to fully close the roof.
Daniil Medvedev compares conditions at US Open to Tokyo Olympics
During the on-court interview, Medvedev compared conditions at the US Open with the Tokyo Olympics. He said, “This and the Tokyo Olympic Games – it was brutal. The only good thing I see in these conditions is that both suffer. Usually, there is not only one that suffers so it’s tough for both of us”
With this win, Daniil Medvedev has secured his place in the semifinals of the 2023 US Open for the 4th time. He will now be facing the winner of the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in his next match. Although Alcaraz is the unanimous favorite in the match, nothing can be predicted for sure, as the German has a better head-to-head record on hard courts.
Daniil Medvedev is the third seed in the 2023 US Open and after Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, he is undoubtedly one of the favorites. Thus, whoever qualifies for the semifinals, will be a brilliant match to spectate.
