Medvedev won the match 7-5, 6-4 in a thrilling encounter that lasted one hour and 59 minutes. Amid some fantastic rallies and shot-making, the match also had its share of drama. As the former World No. 1 won the first set after 68 minutes, Rune was visibly frustrated.

And the emotions got the better of him on the first point of the second set. In an engaging rally, Rune surprisingly sliced one ball that forced Medvedev to rush to the net. The 28-year-old was successful in sending his return across and stood very close to the net.

Rune seeking a winner slashed a ferocious backhand that was directly on the Russian’s body. Medvedev was lucky not to get hit and also make a successful return. But it just created a simple lob for Rune who dispatched it quickly.

As the crowd erupted at the body shot, Medvedev stood at the net expecting an apology from the 20-year-old out of sportsmanship. But Rune was not interested in showing it and moved back to the baseline in preparation for the next point.

Medvedev waited for a few moments before returning to his spot. As he returned to the baseline, he signaled Rune with his two fingers, suggesting he would be watching him now. A man of his word, the Russian went into an aggressive mode and wrapped up the match in straight sets.

After winning the match, Medvedev made a snarky remark to Rune at the net. The Dane, however, remained in his character and refused to budge.

I didn't hear you say sorry.
Said Medvedev at the net.
There’s no reason to talk about it.
Replied Rune, walking away from the player who knocked him out.

Daniil Medvedev to take on local lad Tommy Paul in the semis

It was a splendid performance by the hard-court specialist Medvedev as he fired four aces and committed only one double fault. In comparison, Rune failed to hit a single ace and made six double faults. He also made a total of 41 unforced errors during the match, as Medvedev’s consistency frustrated him.
