Daniil Medvedev joked during the trophy ceremony after losing the US Open final to Novak Djokovic, asking the 36-year-old Serbian “when is he planning to slow down.” Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam championship on Sunday, defeating Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a match that was closer than the straight-set result indicated.
The third seed has had a tumultuous relationship with US Open fans over the years. What began as a difficult relationship has mellowed with time, despite the fact that the occasional incident occurs at the event every year.
After failing in his most recent attempt to win the US Open championship, Medvedev thanked the supporters and expressed his wish to succeed in the future.
In his on-court interview, he said, “Thank you very much. You are amazing, this stadium is special. I came here and thought I want to play good here, I wanted to play well and feel the energy and I did. I really hope I can hold that trophy again some time.”
Novak Djokovic created multiple records at the 2023 US Open
On Sunday at Flushing Meadows in New York, Novak Djokovic won the Men’s singles title at the US Open for the fourth time by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. The Serbian ace easily won the opening set, taking it 6-3. As the Serb won the next set 7-6(5), Medvedev attempted to mount a comeback but failed in the tie-breaker. Djokovic then built on his success from the previous two games in the third set to easily win 6-3.
Using all of his strength and some serve-and-volley cunning, Djokovic defeated Medvedev in a match that was one of the most competitive finals. This was Djokovic’s 24th Grand Slam victory.
Djokovic, 36, pulled ahead of Serena Williams by one Major singles championship to become the first person to win 24 matches in the Open era, which started in 1968. He also became the first male player to have 24 Grand Slam Titles. Amongst this, the Serb created a multitude of records at the 2023 US Open.
With a triumph against the Russian, the Serb equaled Margaret Court‘s record of 24 Grand Slams.
