Daniil Medvedev, the 2024 Australian Open finalist, has been away from tennis for almost a month. He recently withdrew from the Doha Open as well, eliciting a multitude of reactions online.
However, he couldn’t stay away from the media too long, as he was caught in a recent interview with Eurosports, where he spoke about World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and his slight drop in form in tennis.
Daniil Medvedev also had a few thoughts on the Spaniard, which he shared in an interview with Eurosports. He opened up about Alcaraz’s slight drop in form before questioning the Spaniard’s choices.
He started off crazy, at his age. Youngest world No. 1 in history, that says it all. That's why right now when he is losing maybe just a bit more matches than before, you see people starting to say 'oh maybe he lost his confidence a little bit'. He's still 20 years old, very young, so it's normal that sometimes in his career he's going to have some ups and downs.Said Medvedev to Eurosports.
Earlier, the former US Open winner revealed in an interview in Argentina that he prefers an Olympic medal to a Grand Slam. Playing for one’s country is the highest level of pride an athlete can get, yet Medvedev believes otherwise.
Somewhat surprised by Alcaraz’s choice, Medvedev shared his chain of thoughts. He found the young talent’s choice interesting but still believes that the Grand Slam is very important for tennis.
So it's a very big event which I think every player dreams of winning, but I do think that Grand Slams - in my opinion - have the edge and are a bit more important in tennis.Continuing further, he added
Daniil Medvedev shares key insights on Alcaraz’s form and finds it completely normal with a slight dip
Daniil Medvedev recently spoke highly about Carlos Alcaraz’s rise in tennis and even shared his opinion on the Spaniard’s sudden drop in form after bagging the 2023 Wimbledon.
Medvedev extended his support for Alcaraz and reminded the world that the youngster is just starting to flourish in tennis and is bound to face many ups and downs in the journey. Alcaraz had entered the tennis world with a bang. Like a small pocket rocket, he shot his way to the top of the rankings at a very young age.
That’s not all; interestingly enough, Medvedev clearly recalled the moment the Spaniard beat his close friend Andrey Rublev at the age of 17 and revealed that he saw potential in the youngster. The 20-year-old went on to become the youngest Grand Slam winner and even competed with Djokovic for the World No. 1 spot.
I remember he was somewhere close to the top 100, and he was hitting with [Andrey] Rublev. Andrey is one of the hardest hitters in tennis, and at the time I think Carlos was 17. And I was looking and I was like 'wow, he hits stronger than Andrey'. This guy has good potential.Medvedev concluded
However, he is now facing a series of losses, which started at the US Open. Even at the Australian Open, the Spaniard failed to cross the quarter-final mark, as he lost to Alexander Zverev. Medvedev finds it completely normal and is interested in how Alcaraz will cope with the changes.
Carlos Alcaraz has had many comments made about him after the Australian Open quarter-final exit. Since then, he has geared up to play his second tournament in Argentina as a defending champion.
