Russian top player and World No.11 Daria Kasatkina has hit out at WTA for the rules in playing WTA-250 tournaments which will eventually kill them. She also compared the situation with ATP-250 tournaments and said these will not be helping the tournament organizers of WTA-250 events. Kasatkina was talking on the court during the Palermo Ladies Open.
As per Kasatkina, “There are strict rules about how many WTA 250s top 10 players can play. That’s why it’s difficult for these tournaments to survive. I just don’t understand these stupid rules. They’re only in WTA, not ATP.”
Kasatkina lost to the fifth seed Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals of the ongoing tournament. The final score was 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Kasatkina was the top seed so she was expected to win the title here but the Italian stood strong with great service games and equally well-returning game throughout the match.
Daria Kasatkina is going through a rough patch
The Russian top player was expected to make a statement run in the ongoing Palermo Ladies Open after a poor outing in Wimbledon. She lost to former champion Victoria Azarenka in the third round without giving a strong fight. She lost there: 2-6, 4-6 after quite a good start in the initial rounds of the tournament.
The third-round loss has also pushed her out of the Top-10 rankings. This also means that no Russian players are in the top 10 rankings in women’s tennis. This is not a usual sight in the women’s tennis world in which Russia has always produced a number of legends including Maria Sharapova.
Kasatkina was also in the news a few days ago while openly admitting her reluctance to play in Saudi Arabia, and indirectly pointing it against Nick Kyrgios, who was ready to play anywhere for money. She was in the headlines for stating that everything does not revolve around money for her.
