Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Spain’s Davis Cup. He reportedly made his decision following his semi-final loss to Daniil Medvedev at the 2023 US Open. He claimed he was exhausted after the match. Spain captain David Ferrer had expressed his regret at losing a vital player like him. He also commented that many fans would have been disappointed as they had paid to see him play.

This week (12–17 September 2023) in four European cities, sixteen teams competed for eight prized spots in the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage. The top two nations from four groups of four would advance to the final of the international team tournament in men’s tennis, which will be held in Malaga, Spain, from November 21–26.

Spain, the host country was knocked out in the group stage by Serbia 3-0 and therefore won’t be able to play in the finals. This would come as a blow to Davis Cup as the tournament is already on its last legs. The participation of Spain would have at least ensured a large number of fans.

David Ferrer, who was disappointed, refused to offer excuses for the absentees, particularly specific Carlos Alcaraz. He spoke about how in his time the schedule had remained the same.

The former tennis player remarked how during his time as well there were players who played more and some who played less. It is something that will always continue to happen at the Davis Cup.

He said, “When I played, the schedule was the same, so it didn’t change much. There were players who played more and others who played less, it will always exist in Davis Cup. My job is to bring in the best players, the ones who are committed, I can’t do much more. The timetable is such that you have to accept it, that’s all there is to it.

Notably, the placement of the Davis Cup right after the US Open makes it difficult for the players to participate. Ferrer believes that his job is to bring in the best players who are committed to the team. He stated that he couldn’t do much more than that.
