Dayana Yastremska beat Eugenie Bouchard 6-1,4-6,6-4 in the second round of Qualifiers of the US Open. The match was followed by a bit of controversy as the Ukrainian refused to shake hands with Bouchard. This follows from a controversial tweet put up by Bouchard after the pair faced off in the Madrid Open earlier this year.
Yastremska was suspended provisionally at the start of 2021 after testing positive for the banned substance mesterolone. On 22 June 2021, the International Tennis Federation ruled that Yastremska was not responsible for the positive result and that she is eligible to return to competition immediately. Bouchard defeated Dayana 6-7,6-2,6-2 in the first round of the Madrid Open. After the match Bouchard shared a controversial tweet captioned, “There’s something about playing dopers in Madrid.”
Eugenie Bouchard later retracted the tweet and issued an apology after criticism from tennis fans online. The Ukrainian player didn’t forget the tweet and as a result refused to shake hands with her opponent after the match. Watch the video of the incident below:
Dayana is scheduled to play the Belgian Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the next round of qualifiers. Yastremska reached the semi-finals of the US Open as a mixed doubles partner in 2021 alongside Aussie star Max Purcell. She has only managed to reach round three in the tournament as a singles competitor but will be hoping to beat that at the upcoming US Open.

Eugenie Bouchard amazed by Novak Djokovic’s performance in the final of Cincinnati Masters
23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic put in a performance for ages as he got the better of the World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Cincinnati Masters. The marathon 3-setter lasted close to 4 hours. The 3rd set was claimed by many as one of the best set ever played. Among the many admirers of Djokovic’s performance was the Canadian player Eugenie Bouchard.
Taking to Instagram, Bouchard praised the Serbian champion, writing, “I can’t believe he came back to win. He didn’t look too good in the 2nd, face was red, I thought he would retire. This is truly unbelievable. Pushed himself to human limits in sports.”
After being knocked out of the qualifying rounds of the US Open, Genie would try to get herself in perfect shape for the start of next year. Bouchard has not made a single Grand Slam appearance this year. She was knocked out of the qualifiers of the Australian Open and Wimbledon and withdrew from the French Open.
