Dayana Yastremska produced a superb performance on Wednesday to reach the final four of the Australian Open. She was up against the talented young prodigy from the Czech Republic, Linda Noskova, in the quarters of the tournament. The Ukrainian beat the Czech player in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to earn a ticket to the semi-finals of the Grand Slam.
With this win, Dayana Yastremska becomes the first woman qualifier in 46 years to reach the final four of the Australian Open. The first one to achieve the feat since Christine Matison in 1978.
She faced really tough resilience in her qualifying matches, as all of her three matches went to the third round. However, once the main draw started, she elevated her game to the next level.
Referring to this feat, the Ukrainian said to the Australian Presser,
It's nice to make history because at that time I wasn't even born. Next generation and nice to make history. I'm super happy. I played good, but I didn't really feel like I'm playing really well. I just play like I can. I'm really a little bit tired and everything that was left was just fighting.
Dayana Yastremska’s golden run in the Australian Open continues
The 23-year-old secured some big wins of her career in her road to the semi-finals. She beat the Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova in the first round and then eliminated the two-time Australian Open winner, Victoria Azarenka. Even in the quarters, she was up against an in-form Linda Noskova who upset World No.1 Iga Swiatek a few days ago.
In the semis, the Ukrainian will be facing either Russian Anna Kalinskaya or Chinese 12th-seeded Zheng Qinwen. The semi-final match is scheduled for Thursday.
