With the US Open scheduled to commence soon, the entry list for the male players was released and it sure had some big names included. The tournament that starts on August 29th and ends on 11th September has players like Rafael Nadal, defending champion Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios and many more.
The inclusion of 21-time Grand Slam winner, Novak Djokovic in the entry list surely had some heads turned due to the Serbian’s Covid-19 vaccination status and the US government’s strict rules about allowing non-vaccinated foreigners into the nation. The cutoff for the men’s rankings was number 101 and the United States leads every nation in the number of players participating from a single nation with 13 men and 15 women earning direct entry into the tournament.

There are still many uncertainties over whether Novak Djokovic will be able to participate in the tournament or not, the US Open does not have a vaccination mandate over players but they respect the rules of the government, and unless a special exemption isn’t provided to the Serbian, he will be missing out on the tournament.
As per the release by the US Open organizers, “Per the ITF Grand Slam rulebook, all eligible players are automatically entered into the men’s and women’s singles main-draw fields based on ranking 42 days before the first Monday of the event. The US Open does not have a vaccination mandate for players, but it will respect the US government’s position regarding travel into the country for unvaccinated non-US citizens.“
The top 2 players Medvedev and Alexander Zverev are also included in the entry list, Medvedev missed out on this year’s Wimbledon due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War and he will be looking to defend his title in the US Open that starts in just a month. The Americans are led by 13th-ranked Taylor Fritz and 17th-ranked Reilly Opelka with three more as first alternates.
